The Cattail

The cattail is a marsh plant which grows in dense stands and which dominate most all of the shallow ponds to be found in Nova Scotia. The "flower" is wrapped, sausage-like, around the top of a sturdy stem. The sausage part consist of tightly packed pistillate (female) flowers; it is tipped with a narrow yellow spike (the male part). The sword like leaves range from three to nine feet tall.
