Key Events in the History of Nova Scotia: 1858.

  • John Mason, a Philadelphia tinsmith, was granted a patent for his jar. A Mason jar, sometimes called a Ball jar, was a wide-mouthed glass jar with an airtight screw top widely used in home bottling.
  • June 8: Nova Scotia flag used for first time.
  • Halifax: An act to authorize a loan for the construction of railways.
  • June 3: Windsor branch of the Nova Scotia Railroad opened.
  • December 15th: Halifax to Truro railroad opened.
  • An act to incorporate the Grand Lake Land Company.
  • An act to provide for the management of an Insane Hospital. (In 1860, acts were passed in respect to the custody and estate of Lunatics.)
  • Londonderry Iron Co. of Nova Scotia incorporated by Statute.
  • Nova Scotia Barristers' Society incorporated by statute.
