Key Events in the History of Nova Scotia: 1857.


§January 1st: fire sweeps Hollis and Prince Street at Halifax.
§Halifax: An act to limit the erection of wooden buildings.
§James William Johnson became Premier for a second time replacing William Young who had been Premier since 1854.
§Typesetting machine demonstrated.
§Henry Bessemer, an Englishman, receives his patent for his process of converting pig-iron into steel. "The essential feature of this process was the use of a powerful blast to burn out the carbon and silicon from pig-iron in the molten state. The iron produced in this way could be turned easily into steel by the addition of manganese to return the necessary amount of carbon."
§August: An explosion of five tons of gun-powder destroyed the Merchant's Powder Magazine at Halifax.
§The mining leases which the General Mining Association held since 1826 came to an end as the provincial government took over the rights to the minerals of the province.
§The church, up to this point, was the only authority to hear and grant relief in testamentary and divorce cases. In 1857, though there was strong opposition, "divorce was made obtainable in Court by persons of moderate means, instead of being confined, as formerly, to people rich enough to pay for a private Act of Parliament."

§Letters Patent granted to Eliakim Tupper for "the invention of a machine for the manufacture of Shingles."
