Sidney & Beatrice Webb
(1859-1947) & (1858-1943)

These are the Webbs of Fabian fame. The Fabians -- G. Bernard Shaw, Sydney Oliver, Sidney Webb, Annie Besant, Wm. Clarke, Graham Wallas, & Hubert Bland, et al. -- led the socialist political movement at the first part of the 20th century. Another circle (just as socialistic) was The Bloomsbury Group, a group which included Keynes (the Cambridge Professor that got us into so much trouble), Virginia Woolf (a literary artist who committed suicide just as Hitler took Europe by force of arms), and Lytton Strachey. The principal works of the Webbs: The History of Trade Unionism (London: Longmans, Green; 1907), English Poor Law History, The Manor and the Borough (1908),and The Old Poor Law.
