- James K. Polk (1795-1849) is sworn in as President of the United States.
- Potato blight hits Ireland: The Irish famine: It also visited other European Countries, including Scotland a year later. Nova Scotia did not escape. Through the years 1845-7, in addition to great losses in the potato crop, there was a "Weevil or fly" which destroyed a very large proportion of the wheat crop.
- In 1845, the independent Republic of Texas (1836-1845) is annexed to the United States.
