Key Events in the History of Nova Scotia: 1845

  • James K. Polk (1795-1849) is sworn in as President of the United States.
  • Potato blight hits Ireland: The Irish famine: It also visited other European Countries, including Scotland a year later. Nova Scotia did not escape. Through the years 1845-7, in addition to great losses in the potato crop, there was a "Weevil or fly" which destroyed a very large proportion of the wheat crop.
  • In 1845, the independent Republic of Texas (1836-1845) is annexed to the United States.
  • Agriculture, Act passed to Encourage.
  • Atlantic Marine Insurance Co. Incorporated by statute.
  • Halifax: An act to "for lighting City with gas."
  • Halifax: An act for supplying Fresh Water. The first such act to show up since 1817.
  • Halifax: An act "for taxing dogs."
  • Halifax: Richmond Bridge Co. incorporated.
