FN2 Ch8 Most all the history of Nova Scotia, prior to 1763, comes to us from military records.
FN3 Ch8 "Pre-Revolutionary Settlements in Nova Scotia" NSHS, #37 (1970).
FN4 Ch8 "The Census of 1767," NSHS, vol. #7, 1891, p. 59.
FN5 Ch8 Dartmouth and Lawrencetown had, respectively, in 1767, but 39 people and 15 people. "The former lost its popularity as a residential suburb by the terrible massacre of 1756, and did not recover it for three-fourths of a century." (David Allison's article, "The Census of 1767," NSHS, vol. #7, 1891, p. 49.)
FN6 Ch8 "Pre-Revolutionary Settlements in Nova Scotia" NSHS, #37 (1970) p. 19. Interestingly the 1767 returns made out that only 28 Indians were counted. Of course there were more; but they were not people to be easily counted as they did not settle down in any one spot so to be counted. There were however, not too many to be found -- never was there many, and, in 1767 one might hazard a guess of a few hundred.
FN7 Ch8 Haliburton, in his history, vol. 2, pp. 12-3, quotes the Rev. Stiles.
FN8 Ch8 As quoted by Bell, Foreign Protestants (Mount Allison University, 1992), p. 565.
FN9 Ch8 The fortunes of Halifax continued for many years to be linked with whether or not Britain was at war (true right into the 20th century). Halifax was all a bustle during the Seven Years War. Parliamentary grants were made to keep Halifax going. But as the war in North America wound down so did the grants. We can see that in 1759 a great fortune was expended by Pitt part of which was direct grant to keep Halifax going, £21,181; in 1760, £17,636; in 1761, £10,595; in 1762, £5,684. It therefore should not be surprising to see that the provincial debt thereafter went up, being in 1761 £3,775 and going to nearly £25,000 ten years later. (See, Brebner, The Neutral Yankees of Nova Scotia at p. 130.)
FN10 Ch8 History of the County of Annapolis, p. 154.
